3.8.1 Temporal noise

The electron count defined by equation (3.46) multiplied by the electron charge e yields the mean or expected charge signal. In fact, the signal fluctuates randomly over time with the fluctuations appearing as temporal noise. The mean signal is considered to be stationary so that the time average over a period long compared to the time scale over which the fluctuations occur can be replaced by the ensemble average over all possible fluctuation configurations. The noise can then be measured by the standard deviation σ from the mean value of its statistical distribution. Noise power is defined by the variance and so independent temporal noise sources add in quadrature,
